History: In 1984, the South Jefferson Public Library was established as a small “outpost” library in Summit Point. The 480 square foot structure was soon overflowing with books, periodicals, and computers. Parking and storage were inadequate. Finally, after years of grant writing and fund raising, a new library building opened its doors in February 2004. The South Jefferson Public Library now houses over 23,000 volumes and serves 17,800 residents in southern Jefferson County. The library is currently fundraising and planning for an expansion in the near future.
